Frequently Asked Questions
-
No experience at all — we handle everything from installation to maintenance. You simply get to enjoy the bees and the honey.
-
Yes. With proper placement and gentle management, backyard hives coexist beautifully with kids, pets, and neighbors.
-
During the active season (spring through early fall), we visit every two weeks. In winter, maintenance slows down to once a month or as needed.
-
We check hive health, monitor the queen, assess growth, manage pests, add boxes when needed, and keep the bees comfortable and thriving.
-
A small corner of your yard is usually enough — about a 3×3 foot area with good sun exposure and a clear flight path.
-
Bees fly upward as they leave the hive and immediately spread out to forage. Most neighbors never notice bees unless they’re told.
-
Yes. Your installation fee includes bees, hive equipment, and setup on your property.
-
Absolutely. Many clients enjoy observing the process — it’s safe and fascinating. Or you can relax inside while we handle everything.
-
Because bees are living organisms, we can’t guarantee honey production or that a hive will never face challenges such as pests, disease, or environmental stressors. That said, hive health always comes first.
If a hive under our care is compromised or fails, we will replace the hive at no additional cost to you. During harvest season, if conditions don’t allow for a safe or sufficient honey harvest, we’ll leave the honey with the bees to support their survival—especially through winter.
In those cases, you’ll receive an 8oz jar of honey from one of our own Eastside apiaries instead. Our priority is always the long-term health of the colony and the surrounding ecosystem, even when that means less honey in a given season.
-
Honey yields vary by neighborhood and season, but most LA hives produce one to two harvests a year. You’ll receive roughly 5-7 gallons of jarred, raw honey from your own backyard each harvest.
-
No. We handle the entire harvest — collecting frames, processing, filtering gently, and jarring your honey.
-
You’ll start off with two hives and can add more as desired. Many clients choose to expand once they see how easy the process is. We’ll assess your space and recommend what’s possible.
-
If you decide to end services at the end of your commitment period, we relocate the bees safely. A relocation fee applies to cover transport and rehoming.
-
Yes. Backyard beekeeping is permitted in LA as long as hives are placed responsibly. We follow all best practices so you stay compliant.
-
Yes, and we help set up a safe water source so bees don’t rely on pools, fountains, or neighbors’ yards.
-
If you have a severe bee sting allergy, hosting a hive isn’t recommended. If you’re unsure, consult your doctor before starting.
